Hounded About Reading

My son is in the 5th grade at a school in Santa Rosa County and he scored below average last year in reading on the FCAT. Well, my son is one of those children who is very bright but does not do well on tests. He makes good grades all throughout the year but testing is just not his strong suit. Well, because of his scoring below average last year, he is now being hounded about anything having to do with reading this year even going so far as to suggest that he is just not up to par with his reading and cannot read independently. I beg to differ because this is a boy who bought a book at the school's book fair and read it in ONE DAY!!! He makes 90s and 100s on quizzes that he takes after reading books from the library. But he can't read independently? Instead of concentrating on what my son has done all year, they are basing their opinion of him on ONE test! It just isn't right!
