FCAT: Damaging to My Daughter
By a Palm Beach parent
My Daughter Shelby is in the 5th grade and just completed the FCAT testing for
5th grade.
Since the 3rd grade FCAT my daughter will get nervous twitches a week before
testing, which usually go away a week after the FCAT.
Each year it gets more severe. First year, her fingers were moving constantly
and I had to give her a stress ball to help her control it. In 4th grade her
fingers were moving and her eyes were blinking continuously.
Now in 5th grade she has the two above as well as a nervous head shake. The head
shaking is still present and we are working with her with a stress ball and
relaxation techniques to get rid of it.
My daughter was tested for gifted in 2nd grade--a very high level reader. After
3rd Grade FCAT it is a challenge to get her to read. While I have every
confidence my daughter will do well on the FCAT, the pressure to succeed on FCAT
is too much.
My daughter is asking to move to Michigan (nice and cold) just to get away from
the FCAT.
