Concerned Parent: FCAT Deprives Children of Proper Education

My son is in the 5th grade now and two years ago while in the third grade when writing skills were taught he did not get the proper instruction needed because of FCAT testing and speech - he was promoted anyway even though he could not even write at all. His teacher made him do all of his testing on a computer because she could not even read his hand writing. He could not even print or write his own name. Everyone was well aware of the problem but nothing could be done because I was told it would take him away from his FCAT preparations.

These kids in Florida are well aware that all they have to do is pass the FCAT and they will be promoted to the next grade. My daughter went through all of Elementary school without doing any tests, homework or book reports and now my son has done the same thing. She scores in the 98% percentile and he in the high 80% percentile. They are missing out on the proper education that they deserve and it is not fair. For what, so schools can be graded and the property values can increase in our neighborhood, what a disgrace our education system has become. Granted teachers should not have told the students that this was the case but they can not lie and they should not have to. I for one am 100% against these tests as they have done more harm then good.

SIncerely,

Concerned Parent, Coral Springs, FL
